Could Mckayla Wilkes be the next AOC?
Steny Hoyer is 79-years-old, the second most powerful Democrat in the House, and has been a member of Congress since 1981.
Today at The Intercept I have a story about Mckayla Wilkes, a 28-year-old African-American woman who has decided to challenge Hoyer in 2020, betting that there are others out there frustrated with his political record, and eager to see new voices take on Washington.
Wilkes’s challenge will not be easy, but it’s not exactly a moonshot either. In 2018, some of the most entrenched incumbents in the Maryland state legislature were unseated by progressive candidates, including the chair of the Senate Finance Committee who lives in part of Hoyer’s district. Read more about Wilkes and her race here.
