Elizabeth Warren Takes on Affordable Housing and Discriminatory Zoning
and maybe the White House
Housing isn’t typically the sexiest or easiest issue for a politician to tackle, but it is one of the most expensive things Americans have to pay for. With rising costs and stagnant wages, more and more leaders have started to step up and explore how they might assist in easing those burdens.
This week Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren came out with the boldest proposal yet: the American Housing and Economic Mobility Act.
I wrote about the legislation for The Intercept, and note it’s one of the most far-reaching housing bills in decades. With so much bad news out there, it’s nice to be able to report on the advent of legitimately new ambitious and creative policy ideas.
In related news, Elizabeth Warren came out yesterday to say she would “take a hard look” at running for president after the midterm elections were over. She’s one of the first politicians among those whose names are regularly thrown around as potential 2020 candidates to do so (see also: Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Joe Biden, Kirsten Gillibrand, Cory Booker, Andrew Cuomo.)
Warren was at a town hall yesterday talking about Brett Kavanaugh, and described Thursday’s hearing as “powerful men helping a powerful man make it to an even more powerful position.” She said while watching the event she thought “time’s up. It’s time for women to go to Washington and fix our broken government, and that includes a woman at the top.”
