How the climate + labor alliance was revitalized around EVs
I know last week I said I was sharing my last story of 2021, but then a piece I thought was coming out in January went up today, so one final one to share. This is an encouraging story, about some really exciting new organizing between climate and labor groups spurred by the possibility of major expansion in electric vehicle production. I looked at why this is happening, what it means, and I talked with labor historians about how the labor + climate coalition can avoid the pitfalls of its past.
The fight to pass a $4,500 tax credit for union-made electric vehicles, which was included in the House’s Build Back Better Act approved in November, is strongly supported by Biden, but is opposed by Joe Manchin. Whether the social spending bill will include this will be one of the biggest fights in early 2022. (Schumer said on Tuesday night there will be a vote on the Senate floor for the bill in January.)
