The Supreme Court issued a crippling decision last week for public-sector unions in the United States. The country’s largest public-sector union, the National Education Association, gathered this week in Minneapolis for its annual convention.
I spent the last few days covering this national assembly, seeking to understand how union leadership is strategizing for the financial threats ahead, and how labor is interpreting the Court’s decision. I learned a lot, including what’s likely to face legal challenge in a post-Janus world. You can read my dispatch for The Intercept here.
Thanks as always for reading, and your support.
Really enjoyed this. Question for anyone who was there - I had read in an earlier article (I think one of Rachel's) that Janus could be used by labor to expand collective bargaining - i.e., if collective barg is protected speech, then unions could bring suit against restrictions on collective bargaining. Was there any discussion of this at the NEA meeting?
